Each Ji-Ari Shakuhachi that I make takes me about 1-2 months to complete. it is a process of patience and refinement. This one turned out beautiful and has a harmonious and balanced sound unique to the Ji-Ari style.
The process of making a jiari shakuhachi involves a delicate blend of traditional craftsmanship and natural materials. To begin, urushi is applied, a natural lacquer derived from the sap of the urushi tree, which provides both beauty and durability to the shakuhachi. This lacquer is carefully layered on the bamboo, allowing for a smooth, lustrous finish that enhances the instrument's aesthetic qualities. In combination with urushi, tonoko powder, made from finely ground clay, is mixed in to create a unique texture and tonal quality. This powdered clay is often used to fill in any imperfections in the bamboo, ensuring a refined surface that contributes to the rich sound of the shakuhachi.
The harmonious blend of urushi and tonoko is essential in producing a jiari shakuhachi, making it not just an instrument, but a work of art steeped in tradition
